Perplexity is not Google. It does not rank pages by authority and then surface the top result. It re-crawls pages in real time, weights freshness heavily, and matches queries to the most directly answering passage it can find. Optimizing for Perplexity citation requires a different approach than traditional SEO — and most pages are not built for it.

How Perplexity selects sources

Perplexity runs a real-time web search for every query. It re-crawls the top results and selects passages that most directly answer the question. It is not pulling from a static index built weeks ago. It is reading your page right now and extracting the most relevant passage it can find.
