Anthropic's Claude Duet Joins the Proactive Agent Race

What happened

On Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at about 1:44 p.m. Pacific, Anthropic introduced Claude Duet, a proactive agent that connects to your apps, surfaces what needs attention, and works on assignments in the background. VentureBeat's launch coverage describes a daily briefing built from connected services, followed by periodic checks for anything worth a notification. MacRumors frames Duet as Anthropic's answer to Meta's Muse and OpenAI's Dots.

This is a research preview. Access is by waitlist, limited to U.S. subscribers on Claude Pro and Max, and Team and Enterprise plans are excluded. VentureBeat reports that Duet runs on Claude Opus 5.5 and comes as a standalone app for iOS and Android, plus claude.ai. Business Today reports more than 6,000 connectors and plugins through the Claude Marketplace, including Gmail, Slack, QuickBooks, Stripe, DocuSign, Canva, Shopify and HubSpot.

On price, there is no separate Duet charge during the preview. As of the October 21 launch coverage, Claude Pro was $20 a month or $200 a year and Max started at $100 a month. Duet draws on your existing plan allowance, and its background checks count against it.

How it stacks up against Muse and Dots

Meta's Muse is the incumbent. Sensor Tower figures cited by VentureBeat put Muse at 10.9 million downloads since its September 8 debut, with 2.5 million daily active users as of October 16. It runs through Meta's app or WhatsApp, keeps working after you close the app, and the coverage notes a free entry point. OpenAI's Dots runs on GPT-6 Astra, works through ChatGPT, Slack and Teams, and is available to Pro and Business Premium subscribers, with an admin-enabled Enterprise beta.

A caveat: every comparison here comes from launch coverage, not hands-on testing. Treat the head-to-head as a reading of the announcements, not a verdict on performance.

Where the guardrails sit

Duet can inspect information and assemble drafts on its own. Before it sends a message, pays for something, signs an agreement or deletes material, it shows you the intended action and asks for approval. Securities trades and transfers between financial accounts stay prohibited even with approval. According to the coverage, Duet does not see passwords or sign-in tokens, a classifier blocks the most restricted data such as payment-card numbers and government identifiers, and you can disconnect any app at any time.

Anthropic's stated limits are worth reading twice. The preview can misjudge urgency, can miss updates between checks, is less suited to personal errands like booking tickets, and cannot yet show you its browser.

What it means for solo operators and marketers

For a one-person shop, the useful part of Duet is the morning brief and the approval queue, not the chat window. The first workflows that earn their keep are the dull ones with revenue behind them: chasing unpaid invoices, drafting customer follow-ups for your review, and building forecasts from numbers you already track. Marketers get the same deal on campaign admin, with Canva campaigns and HubSpot outreach drafted in the background and nothing sent until you sign off.

Start with two connected apps and one recurring job. Judge it on a month of real briefings, not a demo.

Our take

Of the three, Duet is the most interesting for the unglamorous middle of a business: invoices, follow-ups, forecasts. Muse feels like a consumer product wearing an enterprise hat. Dots feels like a bet that ChatGPT becomes the front door to your entire work life. Duet is betting that the work that matters is boring, and that a human approval step is a feature rather than friction.

My prediction is that every proactive agent will have an approval queue within a year, and most people will rubber-stamp it without reading. I co-founded Urchin, and the lesson I took from 25 years in this business is that a dashboard only helps if somebody looks at it. Treat Duet like an intern with excellent memory and zero judgment: fast, useful, and never allowed near the wire transfer.
